giving his remarks on benghazi. do you think hagel's confirmation will go ahead more swiftly that leon panetta has been there to testify? >> one of the requests made by a number of republicans was for a hearing on benghazi. there's a legitimate and urgent concern about protecting our state department personnel, public servants abroad. i recently returned from a trip with senators mccain and graham and others, bipartisan trip, and we saw very directly the potential threats to our state department and other personnel. so i think there is an effort and it's articulated and reflected in today's hearing that this kind of review precede the confirmation of senator hagel. i believe he will be confirmed. that vote will probably be next week in the senate armed services committee where i serve, and i think that there has been little shifting of democratic support and obviously a statement by senator mccain that he would not filibuster it. so i think the chances are very high he will be confirmed. >> one thing that's been pointed to me is general dempsey will acknowledge that the u.s. milit

people, including chuck hagel, who are supportive of drone technology, because it minimizes u.s. risk. but that -- that is a separate conversation. the operation conversation is separate from the legal one. and i think there is more information that is needed to figure out just exactly how we determine who is an imminent threat, who is an al qaeda operative. how do we make those determinations? who is involved in making the determinations before we launch the drone strike. i think those are very weighty questions that deserve more of a public hearing. >> well, the number of strikes versus the bush administration, colonel, very different. obviously, this is how the obama team wants to execute the war on terror. and the broad range, you're okay with it. but what do you tell innocent folks that get killed or an american that might be hit by a strike inadvertently? >> well, there is nothing you can say about that. war is a messy business. even technologically precise war like this. you raise an interesting point about this president. the first month he was in office, he authorized m

that the confirmation vote in committee was postponed today for hagel. they're asking for more information about his personal finances and about speeches that he made. what about the way both john mccain and lindsey graham and others still going after the defense leadership on why it took so long. the facts they are not prepositioned in africa. they are in germany. they pointed out it was a seven-hour attack, but by the time they were ready to lift off the ground, it was over. that's not satisfying the senators on the armed services committee. >> what's so striking about this is we've been watching these various hearings, exploring the issues and the reports that have been done, and there was a sort of new line of questioning today from a number of republicans. they got the joint chiefs chair and secretary panetta to acknowledge some things that might be surprising to people, that they had a conversation with the president that lasted. with the initial assault on the temporary benghazi, and never spoke to him again. it was under some really piercing questions from lindsey graha
